Drumming Groups in Singapore -
Bloco Singapura
Bloco Singapura is Singapore’s most spanking social cultural and musical collective that spread their love of swinging samba and throbbing batucada beats to everyone who crosses their path. Their sheer number of multi-racial performers makes any Bloco Singapura performance a delicious assault on your senses.
Under the direction of Syed Ahmad, since its debut at the National Museum of Singapore’s inaugural Night Festival ’08, Bloco Singapura has enjoyed mainstream recognition and performed in many major musical landmarks such as Zoukout ‘08, Esplanade December Celebrations ‘08, Chingay ‘09, Worldwide Festival ‘09 and the National Day Parade ‘09.
Infusing contemporary and edgy street aesthetics, Bloco Singapura is a hybrid fusion of Brazilian Afro Blocos and Escolas de Samba cultures that uses positive social models as an arts organisation with an international branding.
Bloco Singapura is establishing itself as an Escola de Samba (samba school) where members meet regularly to learn, exchange ideas and perform, making it a dynamic and all-inclusive community, united by a common love for those complex walls of sound.
Bloco Singapura conducts programmes to promote self-awareness, passion and creativity through their regular discussions and practice. Some of these activities are designed to empower the youths by encouraging them to create and discover their own art. These programmes also encourage independent thinking of the process of development of what is collectively known as Brazilian music which correlates to the concept of Singapore Music.
Leveraging on music as a popular medium to reach the audience, Bloco Singapura aims to bring communities closer together by creating immersive and experiential atmospheres to break through cultural boundaries and perceptions with infectious rhythms and a whole lot of heart.
